What Is an Engagement Letter? 

Introduction 

Before any professional service relationship begins-whether legal, accounting, consulting, advisory, or specialised services-it is essential to define the scope, responsibilities, fees, and expectations. This is done through an engagement letter, a foundational document that protects both the Client and the Service Provider. 

Although short and straightforward, the letter of engagement plays an important role in preventing misunderstandings, aligning expectations, and ensuring each party is contractually protected. 

Definition 

A letter of engagement (also known as an engagement agreement, contract of engagement, or engagement contract) is a written agreement that outlines the services a Supplier will provide to a Client. A simple definition: 

An engagement letter is a document that formalises the professional relationship between a Client and a Supplier by setting out the scope of work and the conditions under which services will be provided. 

In many industries, an engagement letter is used primarily to replace lengthy contracts, especially where repeated or standardised services are involved. 

The abbreviation LOE (LOE means Letter of Engagement) is commonly used in professional settings.
