So, what constitutes a signature? In legal terms, a\u00a0<\/span>signature\u00a0is a mark, symbol, or process adopted by a person with the intention of authenticating a document and\u00a0indicating\u00a0agreement to its contents. The definition of signature does not limit it to cursive handwriting or even to a person\u2019s full name.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A legal signature can take many forms, provided it shows clear intent to sign. Several concepts help explain what\u00a0is the signature in a contract. First is\u00a0intent: the person signing must intend the signature to signify acceptance. Second is\u00a0authentication, meaning the signature must be capable of being linked to the signer as proof of signature. Third is\u00a0association, where the signature is clearly connected to the document being signed.\u00a0<\/p>

Contracts often include a signature page of a contract, a signature block, or an agreement signature line. These may\u00a0contain\u00a0a\u00a0by line\u00a0signature, date and place signature, or wording such as \u201csigned at,\u201d \u201capproved by signature,\u201d or \u201cby its signature\u201d for entities. Types of Signatures<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>

There are\u00a0various types\u00a0of signatures used in contracts today. A\u00a0<\/span>physical signature<\/span><\/b>\u00a0or original signature is handwritten, sometimes referred to as a squiggle signature or squiggly signature. Contrary to common belief, signatures do not have to be cursive, and a signature does not always have to be your full name.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A\u00a0<\/span>typed signature<\/span><\/b>\u00a0may include typing a name at the end of a document or using \u201c\/s\/\u201d meaning signature, which is often referred to as a conformed signature. An\u00a0<\/span>electronic signature<\/span><\/b>\u00a0or eSignature includes methods such as clicking \u201cby checking this box signature,\u201d uploading an image of a signature, or using a digital signing platform. When to Use a Signature<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>

A signature is\u00a0required\u00a0whenever a contract needs clear proof of acceptance. A contract for signature, document for signature, or document to be signed typically requires signatures when legal enforceability matters. This includes commercial agreements, employment contracts, NDAs, real estate agreements, and government forms.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Questions such as \u201ccan you\u00a0eSign\u00a0a W9?\u201d or \u201cdoes an electronic signature hold up in court?\u201d often arise in practice. In most cases, yes\u00a0provided legal requirements are met.
